Brad and Kate say . . .
Happy New Year to you! May 2016 be the best year yet in your marriage. May God’s love and grace permeate every fiber of your being and be infused in your marriage. May your marriage be a testament to who God is and his amazing plan for marriage. On fire marriages can change the world!
Focus on and appreciate who your spouse IS, instead of focusing on who they are not
God has created your spouse as an amazing individual. Embrace who they are. Even if there are some things that bother you. Let them go. Instead look at all the wonder that God has created in your spouse. Find ways to say how much you appreciate those things.
Be intentional about blessing your spouse every week
Make it a habit and be intentional. Bless your spouse each week and even daily in the ways that speak to them. Don’t sit around waiting for your spouse to bless you, bless them no matter the circumstance. It takes 21 days to make a habit and change a mindset. Become habitual about blessing your spouse!
Plan a getaway in 2016 and don’t let anything stop you
Make time for just the two of you. We have shared many times that we make sure that we get away at least twice a year. Once around our anniversary and at Brad’s birthday since the two are six months apart. We have to look each year to see what time and resources we have-but we do it-every year. There have been times we have taken the kids to a family members for the weekend and stayed home. But we are intentional and don’t let anything stop us.
Sex – Because it will always make the list!
It is just that important. As you reflect on the last year, how can you love and serve your spouse in sexual intimacy. How can you make sex a regular priority in your marriage? Think about it! Sex will bind you in a way that nothing else can! Trust God’s plan in that.
Do something specifically to grow your marriage this year
Read a marriage book together, take a class, join a marriage small group, join a re|engage group at a church near you, meet with a mentor couple – find a way to focus specifically on your marriage and growing this year. Don’t let another year of marriage be swallowed up by the pressures of the world. Remember YOUR marriage can and will change the world!
Keep delving into God’s love and grace
Don’t stop delving into how much God loves you and accepts you right where you are. Does he want you to grow and change-yes! He wants that because he wants the best for you. That often involves growing, changing and leaving behind old ways. Never stop diving into the sea of God’s grace!
It is one of the best medicines! No matter where you are in your marriage. Whether you find yourself in the depths of despair, the best you have ever been or somewhere in between-find ways to connect with laughter. Find joy together-it is a great place to start!
